Wilmington Horse Artillery

Co I, 10th North Carolina Artillery

Incorporated in 1861 as part of the 10th North Carolina Artillery Regiment. The Wilmington Horse Artillery’s main role was coastal and city defense of Wilmington. They were assigned under General Bragg in December 1864 for the defense of Fort Fisher. The main engagement they fought in was the Battle of Fork Road where the artillery component was credited with repulsing 3 Federal frontal assaults on Wilmington. The high point of this defense was Company I led by Corporal Hosea Horne who fought directly against his brother Jacob Horne of the 2nd North Carolina Infantry (US). It was said that their mother listened to th engagement from the nearby family home. Both brothers went on to survive the war, and a direct descendent of Hosea Horne is joining the team.

Company I fought in a series of engagements along the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad, eventually joining the main body of Confederate forces at the Battle of Bentonville.
